Tikkun Hanefesh ( Soul Correction)
What is Tikkun Hanefesh?
Tikkun Hanefesh (תיקון הנפש) means "repair of the soul" in Hebrew. It is a deeply spiritual concept in Jewish thought, emphasizing personal healing, self-refinement, and inner transformation. It is closely linked to Tikkun Olam ("repair of the world"), as many Jewish teachings suggest that one must first heal themselves before they can help heal the world.
Origins and Meaning
The idea of Tikkun Hanefesh comes from Kabbalah and Hasidic philosophy, where the soul (nefesh) is seen as a divine spark that can be clouded by negative traits, pain, or worldly distractions. Through self-awareness, ethical living, and spiritual practices, a person can refine their soul and reconnect with their higher purpose.
Practices for Tikkun Hanefesh
- Self-Reflection & Meditation – Engaging in deep self-examination, asking questions like "Who am I?" and "What do I need to heal?"
- Prayer & Connection to the Divine – Jewish prayer (tefillah) helps align the soul with higher spiritual energy.
- Ethical and Moral Growth – Working on middot (character traits) like humility, patience, kindness, and gratitude.
- Acts of Compassion – Helping others is seen as a way to elevate the soul and bring light into the world.
- Study of Sacred Texts – Learning Torah, Talmud, or Kabbalistic teachings can provide wisdom for spiritual growth.
Kabbalistic Perspective
In Kabbalah, the soul is thought to have different levels, and Tikkun Hanefesh often focuses on refining the lower levels—Nefesh (the instinctual soul) and Ruach (the emotional soul). By purifying one's thoughts, emotions, and actions, a person can ascend toward Neshama (the higher, divine soul).
Why It Matters
Just as Tikkun Olam teaches that we must work to heal the world, Tikkun Hanefesh reminds us that personal transformation is essential for greater harmony. Many Jewish scholars teach that when we heal ourselves, we contribute to the collective healing of humanity.
Throughout history, kabbalists have practiced this healing
meditation twice a day, seven days a week, to rejuvenate and
revitalize all body organs. Known as Tikun HaNefesh, or the
